I remember having a fly camp set up for me in Katavi National Park in Tanzania - a wonderful park with few tourists - always an attraction! The camp was set up for just the two of us and we dined at a beautiful table complete with candelabra and the food was exquisite! At sundown, we watched the storks come to roost on the boughs of the trees and we were the only people to camp out in the park. A very special and privileged experience.

The fly camp was rudimentary, but had a very thick and comfortable bedroll and one could see the stars above at night. It was simply magical!

Zimbabwe was stamped firmly on the map 25 years ago as probably the best country to visit for a safari. 25 years on, it has pretty much returned to its former glory. For anyone searching for a luxury safari in Zimbabwe, the country offers some of the finest experiences.

Whether its real luxury in terms of staying at a luxurious remote safari lodge in the very beautiful and unspoilt Gonarhezou region, famous for its elephants and wonderful walking, or staying at a fabulous camp or lodge in Hwange, made famous for its presidential herd of elephants, Zimbabwe offers the iconic wildlife rich safari.

We can also offer time spent with wild dog researchers - from just a day to several days, observing Africa's most efficient predator. The Mana Pools area is my favourite area in Zimbabwe. It is probably the most beautiful area, with the mighty Zambezi flowing at 8kms wide in some places and is the best river to have a canoe safari. In addition, the wildlife is superb with some of the best wild dog sightings here, as well as elephant, lion, and leopard. Malilangwe reserve offers some of the best experiences to view white and black rhino, and it also has extraordinary raptors, such as the black eagle.

The Matobo Hills is yet another region, dotted with rocks and filled with important archaeology. We also offer really wonderful walking safaris in the Mana Pools region, and one can either stay at a camp where the owner is one of Zimbabwe's finest guides or one can take over exclusive use of a camp.

Another wonderful area is Lake Kariba, where there is another lovely owner-managed camp where one can go fishing, bird watching, and game viewing on foot, by boat, and by vehicle.
What you can be assured of though, is that Zimbabwe is renowned for having the finest guides in the business, and this certainly hasn't changed. Zimbabwe offers such diversity both in terms of wildlife as well as scenery, and so many different experiences that complement one another - no other country in Africa has quite this diversity!

The very best family holiday, in my opinion, is a safari. A safari offers absolutely everything and is a fun filled holiday, whether a young child or a teenager, and perfection is then ending up on the coast or sailing around an island at the end.

Being a parent myself, I am always on the lookout for the very best family holiday and I come back to the same one time and time again, which is a family safari. It simply offers something for everyone, providing one has the budget. Whether you have young children (and there are always malaria free regions, such as in South Africa), or older children, then it simply ticks every box. I am lucky enough to take my family on safari every year and they have been happy enough to be my guinea pigs!

The best family holidays take into consideration everyone's interests and hobbies - whether you are an outdoorsy type of family who would like to have a private, tented camp erected just for you in a wildlife rich region, or whether you would love to simply fly camp for just a night beneath the stars. Then there are treehouses too, that one can sleep in for a night.

Learn about other cultures - I remember watching my eight year old daughter spending time in Kenya with Maasai children - the only adults present were our guide and tracker, whom she knew well and trusted and who acted as her interpreters, and she sang and danced with the children and they taught each other songs - the fact they didn't know each other's language didn't matter at all. I have never seen such laughter on both sides of the fence. And this to me is really important. In our western society, our children have so much and I do believe that in a gentle and sensitive manner, we should introduce them to other cultures and educate them accordingly. My children learned how to make bows and arrows, which trees were good to use for this, and how to shoot them. They learned how to make fires with no matches, they visited a school and spent half a lesson with other children, which was illuminating for everyone!

They then learnt about the Maasai warriors and what it takes to become a warrior these days, together with learning about how these cultures are struggling to hold onto their identity in the 21st century. This is all very much here and now, and relevant. Perhaps you might like to go on a walking safari assisted with camels and led by Samburu warriors. Learn so much along the way.
The children can then go off to the coast - perhaps to a beautiful villa which comes complete with a private skipper and boat and so the days can be spent with complete flexibility and freedom, snorkelling around islands and having picnic lunches on them. Or perhaps staying at a beautiful, chic, Robinson Crusoe lodge on its own private island? Going out with the fishermen in their Arab dhows and learning how to fish.

Perhaps it might be sailing on a catamaran in Madagascar which is wonderful fun, and fishing and snorkelling and diving at random. If a luxury family safari is more your style, then you can stay in villas throughout Africa or luxury lodges and camps. Charter from place to place in your own aircraft which means that you don't have to wait at any point. The best thing is to have your own private vehicle and guide which does allow one complete flexibility and freedom and it means that you can bond together as a family, without the need of making small talk with strangers at the dinner table.

Namibia also offers wonderful family safaris, with quad biking on the desert dunes and adrenaline oriented sport invented for the desert, such as sand boarding etc. Spend time with cheetah, up close and personal - something children - no matter what age - always enjoy!
Botswana too offers fabulous experiences - from sleep outs under the stars in the Kalahari desert, to being with habituated meerkat and quad biking across the salt pans. You can even go out for a couple of nights with your guide and bedrolls and have your own adventure, away from everyone! Or have a tented camp closed to you, headed by a wonderful guide who is so good with children and teaches them everything from learning about the night sky, to poling a mokoro (and in our family's case - losing the pole!), but it is all good fun and educational.
Ultimately, the best family safari is one where everybody has got something out of it. You return united as a family, sated and happy.

African safari holidays in the Okavango Delta in Botswana take wildlife enthusiasts into a region of stunning annual change, rich in bird life as well as the iconic big mammals. Whether looking for the elusive Pel's Fishing Owl, watching African Wild Dogs stalk prey, or drifting to sleep to the nocturnal sounds, a visit to the Okavango Delta repeatedly reveals why the region has been named one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa.

The Okavango's Seasonal Floods
The Okavango Delta is an incredible location for African safari holidays, thanks to the seasonal flooding that drives its ecosystem. It is an inland delta, which means that it does not drain into any sea or ocean. At one time it drained into Lake Makgadikgadi, an ancient lake into which three rivers drained: the Okavango, the Zambezi and the Cuando. The lake largely dried up in the Holocene era, surviving only in saltpans, small lakes and the seasonal flooding of the Okavango.

Today, rain falling in the distant Angola highlands in January and February flows to the delta, peaking between June and August in the dry months. The water encourages the exuberant growth of grass and draws animals from hundreds of kilometres around, seeking food and water. The high concentration of wildlife sustained by this natural phenomenon makes African safari holidays in the delta an unforgettable experience for wildlife enthusiasts.

Moremi Wildlife Reserve
Visitors can stay in Moremi Wildlife Reserve on the eastern edge of the delta, where they can camp in the bush in comfort and go out on drives through the reserve. Bird watching enthusiasts are treated particularly well by the delta's waters, which draw in a number of species, including the Slaty Egret (endemic to Botswana), Lesser Jacana, Southern Carmine Bee-eater, Giant Eagle Owl and Bat Hawk. With an expert ornithologist guide, bird watchers may see the elusive and beautiful Pel's Fishing Owl.

The water and grass draw an array of mammals, to drink, eat and, of course, prey on other animals. Many of the iconic mammals that those on African safari holidays will want to see come to the delta - including Elephants, Buffalos, Giraffe, Impala and Lechwe Antelope; they in turn draw and sustain populations of Lion, Leopard, Cheetah and African Wild Dog. Indeed, of the latter, the Okavango Delta is home to one of the richest pack densities in the continent, giving wildlife enthusiasts a greater chance of seeing this handsome animal in its natural environment.

Khwai Community Area
It is also possible to enter the Khwai Community Area, adjacent to the north-eastern parts of Moremi Wildlife Reserve. There, a village of Babukahwe people (river bushmen) work with the local environment to encourage sustainability. They welcome ecotourism, permitting visitors from all over the world to see the many animals in the region, by day or by night.
