The majestic Sahara Desert consumes approximately 3,500,000 square miles of space on the planet. A majority of this space falls within the Morocco borders. Vast arrays of ethnic lifestyles can be found making a home in the Sahara Desert.

The most popular ethnic group is the Arabic Berber groups that include Hassaniva-speaking Moors and African groups of Tubu, Nubians, Zaghawa and Hausa. The Sahara Desert holds the distinction of being virtually as large in size as the continental United States. Its historical roots date back over 3 millions years ago and present day measures sand dunes at least 600 feet in height. Boundaries extend to the Atlantic Ocean on the west, Atlas Mountains to the north, Red Sea to the east and valley of the Niger River to the south.

Borders of the desert create different sections of the desert. The area containing a majority of the mountains and high plateaus lies inside the central portion at Tibesti Mountains and Air Mountains. The Sahara Desert provides some of the most picturesque views in Morocco. One of the greatest ways to become consumed with the views and attributes of the area is through a guided trekking adventure. This adventure will take travelers off paved roadways and into a 'behind the scenes' look at the Sahara Desert. Travel around Mhamid and through the Erg Chigaga sand dunes. At times the desert trek can be physically demanding. Therefore it is advisable for all participants to maintain an adequate fitness level before embarking on the journey.

The first day of a Sahara Desert trekking adventure begins with meeting fellow trekkers and tour guide in the vibrant city of Marrakesh. After introductions and pleasantries are exchanged, the tour moves on to the High Atlas Mountains for a lunch break. Once lunch has concluded, the trek will continue on towards the desert area where the first overnight stay will occur. More than likely, tour guides will elect to stay in authentic Moroccan riads to give participants a feel for what lies ahead on the trek.

As the sun rises on day two of the adventure, travelers are lead towards the Mhamid region. Here, camels will be utilized to enter into the Sahara Desert. Scenery in this quaint village features rolling sand dunes with landscaping consisting mostly of open spaces and rock formations. The sand dunes in Erg Chicgaga will be crossed on camel as the trek continues under the beautiful Moroccan starry skies. The day comes to a close as trekkers prepare for a campout in Bivouac nomadic tents.

On the third day of the trekking adventure, travelers cross through the Valley of 1000 Kasbahs. This legendary region consists primarily of palm tree grooves. It is an incredible area for exploration on foot, mule or 4 x 4 vehicles. A notable sight is the Amerhildil house where Moroccan royalty once resided. The Glaouis family called this place home during their years of rule over Morocco. The evening will be spent in another equally famous Kasbah that is now a hotel of sorts.

The Sahara Desert trekking adventure draws to a close with a return to Marrakesh. Before that occurs, there are still sights and sounds of the Sahara Desert to enjoy. Make a stop in the quaint town of Ait Benhaddou where Hollywood makes a stop on occasion as well. Blockbuster hit moves such as The Mummy and Gladiator have used the area scenery for movie scene backdrops. Another piece of Hollywood movie glitz and glamour can be found in the village of Ouarzazate. Various movie sets have set up shop here in the time that Atlas Studios relocated its home here.

After an exciting four day trekking adventure through the majestic Sahara Desert, it is time to return home. This is achieved by descending from the High Atlas Mountains into Marrakesh. Here weary trekkers can return to their hotels and riads for a much needed night of rest. The next day will more than likely consist of departing the Marrakesh airport and heading back home.

If sand isn't quite your thing then the Draa Valley near Agdz is simply stunning and mountain biking past local villages on dirt roads is great fun and you can choose your pace. For those not wanting to ride you can walk the valley and share tea with the people you meet. This is a calm environment very different to the colourful life of Marrakesh.

Whatever you choose to do on your Morocco holiday, remember there is something new to explore on every corner. North you'll find roman city ruins and to the south beach resorts complete with ageing harbours. Our number one is the activity holiday but if you're more sedate and like to eat and relax then try a week at Essaouira or take meandering walks in the stunning Atlas Mountains.

Marrakech is the most significant of Morocco's four Royal Cities, and it has been a favorite playground for the rich and famous for nearly a century. Well-known celebrities maintain sumptuous villas here, nestled in the foothills of the great Atlas chain of mountains.

The sea, the snow, the desert -- all are within easy reach. Madonna, Gerard Depardieu, Kate Moss, and Sir Richard Branson all own residences near Marrakech. Sarah Jessica Parker, José Carreras, Selma Hayek, Elton John, Juliette Binoche, Adrien Brody, Jennifer Aniston, Orlando Bloom, and Paloma Picasso are all frequent visitors to Marrakech and speak effusively of its charm.

Many of this glittering crowd were on hand for the re-opening of Marrakech's historically important hotel de luxe, La Mamounia. If you have never been treated like royalty and crave that experience (if only for a day or two!) then you should definitely include a stay at La Mamounia when you visit Morocco. It is not expensive. A couple can stay at La Mamounia for something around $250 a night per person, which is today the cost of a mid-range hotel in Manhattan.

While you are in Marrakech, do not fail to visit the famous square in the heart of the medina called Djemaa El-Ena, perhaps the single top tourist attraction in Morocco. The buildings you see lining the central plaza were probably put up a thousand years ago. These acres of land have been continuously teeming with people ever since. During sunlit hours, the plaza is filled with juice vendors in stalls, mobile water vendors who pour water from leather bags, and troupes of street performers - snake charmers who try to induce tourists to pose with them for a fee and musicians with Barbary macaques, much like organ grinder monkeys, and birds. In the late afternoon snake oil salesmen, street magicians, and poets succeed these.

As dark descends, Djemaa El-Ena fills with portable food stalls and red hot charcoal braziers, and this is when the residents of Marrakech are themselves most likely to take in their famous square to enjoy the Moroccan equivalent of outdoor fast food.

For a country of its size, Morocco encompasses many extremes of microclimate and environment. From the heights of the Atlas, where it is as cold and as snowy as on Rocky Mountain peaks, you can also explore on the same day the gigantic burning sand dunes of the Erg Chebbi in the Sahara. These awesome features of the landscape, waves frozen in the sand but shaped by the wind much as the waves of the ocean shaped, are 150 feet tall and made of a thin, pulverized, orange red sand that is the hallmark of the Sahara.

Visits to the Erg Chebbi are typically organized from a little village in southeastern Morocco, about 30 miles from the Algerian border, called Merzouga, a town with the typical blue paint on homes one sees so often in Morocco, the country of sapphire blue. Long thought very dry, in recent years geologists have discovered a huge underground aquifer of fresh water. It will supply water to Merzouga for hundreds of years.

Part of Morocco's charm is that it is a country of charming opposites, and so when you have experienced the sand dunes and seen the sun set in the Sahara you may long for the sea and a different wind than the winds of the desert. The fishing village of Essaouira is the place in Morocco to experience the trade winds blowing into its protected bay. 

These winds make the beaches of Essaouira the prime location for the best windsurfing and kite surfing in the Med. Since the days Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman created their classic film "Casablanca" in 1942, Morocco has held a special place in the hearts of all vacationers, especially Americans. Morocco, too, probably has the longest and best reputation in terms of North Africa tourism, with a glowing record stretching back to before the Second World War. This is the year more American than ever will experience Morocco for the first time.
